October 10th is World Mental Health Day — a moment to reflect on how we care for mental health, especially in times of crisis. This year, the WHO invites us to focus on mental health support during disasters and emergencies. At MENTBOX, we believe this must include those who are most often left out: vulnerable populations.
Communities facing poverty, exclusion or discrimination — like the Roma population in areas such as Polígono Sur in Seville — often carry a heavier burden of psychological distress. And yet, they’re rarely part of the studies that shape mental health policies or emergency responses.
There’s also a deep issue of trust. Many people in these communities don’t feel safe or heard in the healthcare system. If we want interventions to work — especially in times of crisis — we need to build that trust. That starts with listening, involving, and adapting.
Mental health research must be inclusive, culturally sensitive, and rooted in real-life contexts. Not just for the sake of science, but to make sure no one is left behind — especially when it matters most.
